Rancho Minerva Safe Routes To School Improvements Plan

Post Date:05/19/2020 4:10 PM

With the assistance of an engineering consulting firm, the City of Vista has completed a plan to improve walking and biking and to slow down traffic along the streets leading to Rancho Minerva Middle School. The City and the consultant held two community workshops and a field walk with the school and its parents.

At the first community workshop and at the field walk, the City learned about all the issues faced by the residents and the students at the school. The most significant issues identified are lack of sidewalks, difficult pedestrian crossings and high speed traffic. The City and the consultant developed a proposed set of solutions including sidewalks, roundabouts and safe pedestrian crossings. The proposed concept was discussed at the second community workshop. Based on the discussion and input from community members, a final plan of proposed improvements was developed.

The estimated cost to fully design and implement the plan of improvements is $3.5 million. The City and the consultant are currently developing a grant application to submit to the State’s Active Transportation Program to fund the plan of proposed improvements. The due date for submitting the grant application is September 15, 2020 and the successful applicants should be announced early next year.
