Get a Free Home Check While Away for the Holiday
Vista residents planning on being away from home over the holidays may register their home with the Vista Sheriff’s Department for a free vacation home check. All residents have to do to take advantage of the program is let the department know they’re heading out of town and fill out the Home Check form. Bring the application to the Vista Sheriff's Station, located in the County Court Complex at 325 S. Melrose Drive. From there, Senior Volunteer Patrol members keep a watchful eye of homes while residents are away.
Vista Sheriff Captain Greg Rylaarsdam reports that Vista Sheriff deputies will be patrolling local shopping areas, including North County Square during the upcoming weeks. This is part of the San Diego Sheriff’s Holiday Watch for the season. Shoppers are encouraged to approach the deputies if they notice suspicious activity or have safety questions.
The Vista Sheriff's Department offers these safety tips for shoppers during the holidays:
- Stay alert and be aware of what's going on around you.
- Park in a well-lighted space, lock the car, close the windows, and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.
- Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a check or credit card whenever possible to deter pickpockets and purse-snatchers.
