City to Host Grand Opening for New Civic Center

On Tuesday, June 29, the City of Vista is celebrating a significant event with the grand opening of the new Vista Civic Center
The opening ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. and will take place at 200 Civic Center Drive. The event will include guided tours of the new facility and a ceremonial ribbon cutting to commemorate the historic event.
The 100,000 square foot building includes a three story administration building and a single story Community Room that doubles as an Emergency Operations Center.
"This is truly a significant and historic occasion,” said Vista Mayor Morris Vance. “Our new Civic Center is one of the most visible manifestations of our city’s strategic and forward-thinking vision for our future.”
The new civic center utilizes many energy-saving techniques throughout, and once the final construction is completed in December, the building will earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
The design of the project was led by the architecture firm, Carrier Johnson + Culture. Highland Partnership, Inc. is the builder for the project. The project broke ground in August 2008 and the building was completed ahead of schedule in June, 2010. The final phase of construction, including the demolishing of the old building (August 2010) and the landscaping and a visitor parking lot, will be completed by December 2010.
Funding for the new Civic Center was made possible through revenue provided by a half-cent sales tax increase approved by Vista voters in November, 2006. In addition to construction of the new Civic Center, other community projects supported by the voters include building two new fire stations and renovating a third, renovations of the Moonlight Amphitheatre Stagehouse and construction of a new sports park. Construction on the City’s remaining community project; the Vista Sports Park is moving forward and will be completed in August of this year.
