Geographic Information Services
The Geographic Information System (GIS) Division seeks to promote the use of GIS technology at the City of Vista, and to facilitate public access to the City's spatial data. Specifically, the GIS Division strives to help meet the changing needs of government and the public by providing the following services:
- To serve as the City's spatial data repository
- To serve as the liaisons to all City departments using GIS
- To identify, propose and implement GIS solutions for solving government problems
- To provide useful geographic data and maps to City departments and the general public
About GIS
What is GIS?
A geographic information system is a framework for gathering and organizing geographic data in order to better understand our world and apply that geographic knowledge
to help solve problems and guide human behavior. Literally, it is an integrated collection of computer software and data that is used to view and manage information about
geographic places, analyze spatial relationships, and model spatial processes. A GIS also provides the means to display and analyze this information in the form of maps, tables,
websites, and many other forms.
Fundamental to the design of GIS is the integration of geographic data with ancillary information about the geographic features. Many types of information about our community are stored in databases and linked to distinct map layers. The City of Vista uses these map layers to create maps and perform detailed analysis to aid in city planning, management, engineering, and asset management. These "intelligent maps" provide information about a region such as where people live and work, where growth and development occurs, locations of utilities and public facilities, locations of environmentally sensitive lands, and much more...
Download Maps
The maps listed below are currently available for viewing or download. They are in PDF file format and Adobe Reader is required to view them. These maps will be periodically reloaded to reflect data updates and map changes. Some maps may be very large files and it is recommended that a broadband connection is used if viewing them online. Online Web Mapping
Vista Maps:
The GIS Division is excited to offer a custom online mapping tool that will soon be available to the public. This site will allow users to build their own custom maps using various GIS layers such as streets, parcels, and aerial photography. In addition, you will have access to certain property and land use information, and will be able to perform searches. We have not established a launch date yet, but please check back in the coming months to see our new mapping website.
