sewer improvement projects

The City of Vista and the Buena Sanitation District collect sewage via 316 miles of municipal pipes and convey it for treatment to the Encina Water Pollution Control Facility in Carlsbad. Vista provides sewer service to residents in both the City of Vista (NW) and the Buena Sanitation District (SE), which includes areas in the unincorporated part of San Diego County.

Between 30 to 40 percent of the sewer pipes are 30 years old or more. Due to lack of capacity (pipes are too small) or age and condition, many of these sewer pipes or “lines” are in need of replacement or rehabilitation to ensure reliable sewer service. Proactively restoring or replacing the infrastructure will minimize and/or eliminate the need for costly emergency repairs and will prevent sewer leakages or spills.

The projects listed below are the first of the 20 capacity sewer improvement projects to be initiated. Construction will begin within the next two to four weeks. After the construction projects are completed, the streets will be resurfaced. Those properties affected by the projects will be notified prior to construction.

Cananea and Calera streets (CIP 8172)

Project: Replacement of 1,046 feet of 8-inch pipe originally installed in 1961, with a new 12-inch pipe; includes the reconnection of 24 sewer lateral house connections and the reconstruction of six manholes.

Impacts: To minimize construction noise disturbance in this residential area, construction will occur during the day. Residents will have 24/7 access to their homes.

Estimated construction time: three to four weeks

Vale Terrace Drive and East Vista Way (CIP 8215)

Project: Replacement of 352 feet of an 8-inch pipe originally installed in 1972, with a new 15-inch pipe; includes the reconnection of one sewer lateral connection and the reconstruction of one manhole.

Impacts: To minimize traffic impacts in this business area, construction will occur at night.

Estimated construction time: one to two weeks

The next significant sewer project will occur in the spring/summer months of 2011, and will take place in the Shadowridge area, around Dawson and Melrose drives (CIP 8173). Affected residents will be notified in advance.
