City to Host Grand Opening Events for Two New Fire Stations
The City of Vista Fire Department is opening its two new fire stations’ doors on Saturday, April 18 to exhibit their newly-constructed stations.
The opening event for Fire Station No. 5 will begin at 10 a.m. and will take place at 2009 S. Melrose Drive. Opening ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. at Fire Station No. 6, located at 651 E. Vista Way. The public is invited to the official ceremonies and to tour the state of the art facilities. The events will include opportunity to tour the stations, meet the firefighters and to examine the fire apparatus.
Fire Station No. 5, designated as South Melrose Fire Station, will serve the community in south Vista and Fire Station No. 6, designated as Wildwood Fire Station, will serve the community in central and north Vista. Both stations have been constructed with many energy-saving components and have earned a basic level certification LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The design of the facilities was led by Jeff Katz of Jeff Katz Architecture. Both buildings were constructed by Erickson-Hall Construction Company. Construction, which began in spring, 2008 on both facilities was completed on time and on budget. Costs for construction are $12.2 million for both stations.
Funding for the new facilities was made possible through increased revenue provided by a half-cent sales tax increase approved by Vista voters in November, 2006. In addition to the fire station construction project, other community projects supported by the voters include the seismic retrofit and renovation of Fire Station No. 1, construction of a new civic center, a new sports park and the renovation of the Moonlight Amphitheatre stage house.
