Escondido Avenue to be Renamed Civic Center Drive

CivicCenterDr

The City of Vista is pleased to announce that it will be renaming Escondido Avenue to Civic Center Drive on May 1, 2010.  The renaming will coincide with the opening of the new Civic Center to more accurately reflect its place in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When will this take effect? The name change will take effect in May 1, 2010.

  • What sections of Escondido Avenue does the renaming apply to? The name change will only apply to the main stretch of Escondido Avenue, which runs from central Vista, near Wildwood Park, to Sunset Drive, just south of Highway 78.
  • How will motorists transition to the new name? To phase in the new name, highway exit signs will be placed on the sides of Highway 78 notifying drivers of the change.  In addition, all Vista road signs will be replaced to reflect the new name. In future years, we expect that CalTrans will receive approval to improve Highway 78 roads and at such time, they will replace all existing signage to include Civic Center Drive.
  • How was this name chosen? In September 2008, the City held several public forums to gather input on name suggestions and voted in favor of changing the name of Escondido Avenue to Civic Center Drive.  The Vista Chamber of Commerce also supported the name change.

  • Will my address number change if I live or work on Escondido Avenue? No your number will not change, just the street name. The only exception is the new Civic Center (City Hall) that will change from 600 Eucalyptus Avenue to 200 Civic Center Drive on May 1.
  • How does this affect residents and businesses who live on Escondido Ave?  While your street number will remain the same, residents, tenants and property owners are responsible for notifying all correspondents about the street name change.  This includes utility and phone companies, mortgage companies, magazine subscriptions, and any business or person who sends you regular mail.  We understand the associated costs to businesses and residents resulting from the changes to letterhead, business cards and marketing materials.  As a result, we are providing you with advanced notice, and the Post Office has agreed to forward all business and resident mail for one year from the date of name change to assist in the transition.
  • Can I change my letterhead now to say "Civic Center Drive"? No. The Post Office will not deliver your mail to Civic Center Drive until the City changes the name on May 1, 2010. Because the Post Office forwards your mail for one year after the name change, the clock will start on May 1, 2010 to give people the maximum amount of time to adjust and notify recipients of the change. Again, the Post Office will continue to deliver your mail using the Escondido Avenue name for one year after the May 1, 2010 name change.

We are hopeful that over the next 21 months you will be able to make the transition and the new Civic Center building, coupled with an identifying street name, will promote Vista as an innovative leader in the community, while preserving the city's sense of community and unique identity.
